Beskrivelse

Deliberate practice is an evidence-based method of skills training that in recent years has aroused interest in the field of psychotherapy. The core of the method is promoting active, procedural and tailored training. Prominent psychotherapy researchers and authors now agree that deliberate practice is one of the most promising contributions to the future of psychotherapy training and supervision (Anderson & Perlman, 2020; Miller, Hubble & Chow, 2020; Norcross & Karpiak, 2017; Rousmaniere et al., 2017; Wampold et al., 2019). This seminar shows you what such training looks like in practice, and how to use it for your own professional development. The field of psychotherapy emphasizes guidance, clinical experience, literature and courses as tools for achieving professional development. A common problem is that these are highly theoretical and passive learning methods. The science of learning tells us that such pedagogy can create intellectual understanding, but is unlikely to influence clinicians’ procedural skills (Vaz & Rousmaniere, 2021). With deliberate practice, we translate this conceptual understanding into clinical skills. The aim of this seminar is to give you a practical introduction to deliberate practice (DP). Through new DP exercises in a proven format taken from the new APA Books series, “The Essentials of Deliberate Practice”, we will show how we can implement DP for better clinical skills acquisition. You will also learn how to get started with deliberate practice training yourself, and find out where you can find free resources that will help you practice key clinical skills.
